 INSTRUCTOR  ★Jean Dewe

★Message  from Instructor

Most of the dances Teacher teaches are from sources written for the aristocracy as

the writers were mostly court dancing masters and the manuals were mostly
designed to build the master's prestige. The exception was Arbeau's book.
Arbeau was an elderly cleric and wrote mostly to amuse himself and probably
to remember his more exciting past.  Unlike other manuals, Arbeau begins by
explaining the basics of the different dances and his book is much more a
social dance manual than the other sources. While most of the written
descriptions of dance that survive come from the 16th. century and later,
some earlier dance music survives as do a few paintings and engravings.
Based on these and the later steps we know from the manuals, some of the
earlier dances have been recreated (such as the farandole),

Dancing was done during the middle ages and Renaissance at parties and moreformal balls and was both a main source of diversion and a major way foryoung men and women to become acquainted. During a dance, couples had afreedom to meet, talk and flirt in a way that they could not do elsewhere.

She looks foward to teaching at Castle Tintagel.
